They truly do not write public notice signs like this anymore. The rather wonderful peace of prose can be found at the start of the west-bound public footpath alongside Llanfairfechan beach.

Positively the last snow photo, I promise. From Caerwys looking south some twenty minutes after dawn today.

Lloyd George at 150.

Lloyd George was born 150 years ago today. He was, perhaps, the most outrageously brilliant politician this nation has ever produced. It is possible to admire and loath him in equal measure; it is certainly not possible to ignore him. A library of books has been produced in an attempt to understand him better. Yet in a parliamentary career that began in 1891and stretched until the end of the Second World War there are many Lloyd Georges. His career is often compared to that of Winston Churchill. It was said by someone that if you met Churchill he would make you feel you had just met the most brilliant man the world; but whereas if you met Lloyd George he would make you feel as though you were the most brilliant man in the world.

The first snow of winter is merely a dusting of dandruff.

Derek the weather has predicted a 'snow event' for Friday. Everyone - it seems - is getting excited about the prospect of being stranded, crashing their car, and not being able to ride a bike. I hate the snow.

Is this a photograph from last summer? It looks like it could be, but no, it was taken around 10am this morning whilst out cycling on the Halkyn mountain. The perfect January morning.

Tonight I'm giving a lecture entitled 'Caerwys and the Second World War' to the local historical society; the promotional poster is today's image.

Pedalling in the pouring rain this morning I came up with the original catchphrase that cycling is for 12 months, not just for Christmas. Why was I riding in such poor conditions? The answer - foolish perhaps - is to match for 2013 my distance on the bike for 2012 of over 6000 km. Today's image is the report page from my Garmin account that shows all the kilometres cycled, hills climbed, and calories expended across 2012.

The year in 365 images: #1

Aside from the sporting challenges this year will present I have decided to see if I can define the forthcoming twelve months in 365 images. They will be daily images of any kind: some from my camera, others from the Internet. They maybe important or mundane, but they will have caught my attention each day in some way. A colleague tried a similar project last year and got to July and I enjoyed following his daily blog, so here is my attempt to define the year in images. Some will have notes to accompany them, others left without comment.

The first is the results sheet from the first time trial of the year held near Denbigh this afternoon. I was quite pleased with my time of 27.11, especially considering my pedals would not engage with cleats on my shoes.
